Fatherhood

Synopsis

Three men are expecting their first child. Kristopher, David and Sindre, all in their early thirties, are living in a steady polyamorous relationship. While David and Sindre identify as homosexual cis men, Kristopher was born as a woman and today identifies as a homosexual man. Kristopher will be the birth father - to our knowledge the first of his kind in Norway. And the fact that he is able to become pregnant is a result of lucky coincidences.

As a teenager Kristopher went through tumultuous years of identity affirmation, hormone treatment and breast surgery. In Norway at the time Kristopher was 18, he had to undergo medical sterilization to be able to legally change his gender. Kristopher was adamant about his sexual identification and had been since a child, but dreaded the removal of his cervix. On the day of the operation he confessed this to a nurse, and she said that this was no problem - they only had to take the ovaries. This calmed 18-year old Kristopher, who went through with the operation. But he was left with a feeling of loss. And he knew that as a result of the hormone treatment his cervix would wither and become non-functional. His life long wish to become a father seemed a hard, but unavoidable sacrifice in the process of gender transitioning.

More than a decade later, Kristopher was in a steady relationship with David and Sindre. On a rutine gynecological check a the medical person let slip: by the way - your cervix looks good and fully functional. At the tip of a hat Kristopher and his two partners’ world was about to change as a new possibility arose - they could all become fathers. Actually it was David, who is originally Catalan, who suggested it. What about egg donation? Though illegal in Norway at the time - other European countries allowed it. They pondered it for a while and decided to go for it. Kristopher had an IVF-insertion in Helsinki in 2022. A donated egg inseminated by one of the other two fathers was inserted into his cervix. They were pregnant.

The film chronicles the three fathers’ journey from early on in the pregnancy through the time of waiting, the birth and the beginnings of a new life. Are they ready for what awaits them? And is society ready to embrace them - and their child?
