Thorvald started Indie Film Bergen in 2023. He completed a Master's degree in Documentary and Journalism at Volda University of Applied Sciences in 2013, where he was also head of the Norwegian Documentary Film Festival. Thorvald made his debut as a producer with the documentary series Asylbarna (2015), and subsequently produced the hit series Fjorden Cowboys for four seasons at Flimmer Film.

In 2019, he produced Once Aurora about the artist Aurora Aksnes, a film that was named Best Nordic Documentary at Nordisk Panorama. From 2019 to 2022, he worked at the production company Screen Story, where he produced the documentary series Katastrofen Kielland (2022) for Norwegian TV 2 and the feature documentaries What happened to Torstein Raaby? (2022) and The Renaissance Prince (2024).

Thorvald was part of EAVE Producers Workshop 2024, is serving as a deputy board member of VIRKE Norwegian Producers Association and as program director of The Norwegian Documentary Symposium 2024. His latest film “The Lions By The River Tigris” premieres at CPH:DOX 2025.

Thorvald Nilsen er produsent og daglig leder i Indie Film Bergen. Han fullførte en mastergrad i dokumentar og journalistikk ved Høgskulen i Volda i 2013, der han også var leder for Den Norske Dokumentarfilmfestivalen.

Han debuterte som produsent med den prisvinnende dokumentarserien Asylbarna (2015), og produserte deretter blant annet seersuksessen Fjorden Cowboys i fire sesonger for Flimmer Film.

I 2019 produserte han En gang Aurora, om artisten Aurora Aksnes, som ble kåret til Nordens Beste Dokumentarfilm på Nordisk Panorama. Fra 2019 til 2022 arbeidet han i Screen Story, der han blant annet produserte dokumentarserien Katastrofen Kielland (2022) for TV 2 og den enkeltstående dokumentarfilmen Renessanseprinsen, som ble nominert til Gullruten for Beste Dokumentarfilm i 2024.

Thorvald er også varamedlem i styret til VIRKE Produsentforening, og leder av programkomiteen til Dokumentarkonventet 2024. I 2024 deltar han på EAVE Producers Workshop med prosjektet Løvene ved elven Tigris.
